Research & development base for Silicon Island

Kyushu is rich in high quality water and human resources, and accessible by air since a number of airports exist in the area. With this base, semiconductor industries began to concentrate here in the 1960s and it is now known as “Silicon Island.”

The shipment volume of semiconductors in Kyushu accounts for approximately 25% (JPY 13,254 million) of the national volume. There are a great number of semiconductor related companies that have their base in Kitakyushu, especially in the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park.

There are facilities for the design of semiconductors, clean rooms, and testing rooms in the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park. Furthermore, the Semiconductor Technology Center coordinates collaborations between semiconductor companies and universities, assists with technological consultations, coordinates joint development/order intake, and develops human resources to conduct total operations (design, trial, and evaluation) for semiconductors targeted to company engineers and students.
